Bit more on that Van Cliburn thing from Wiki:
Recognition in Moscow propelled Cliburn to international prominence.[10] The first International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958 was an event designed to demonstrate Soviet cultural superiority during the Cold War, on the heels of that country's technological victory with the Sputnik launch in October 1957. Cliburn's performance at the competition finale of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 on April 13 earned him a standing ovation lasting eight minutes.[3][11] When it was time to announce a winner, the judges were obliged to ask permission of the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to give first prize to an American. "Is he the best?" Khrushchev asked. "Then give him the prize!"

Surely Van Cliburn must get a mention, if only for his magnificent version of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1 Mvt I-1, which won him an award in the Soviet Union as it was then:

What charliepaynter said i.e.
Mike Garson (Bowie's pianist)
Mike was essentially the blood in the veins of the Aladdin Sane album...
Gotta be in his seventies now; was older than Bowie iirc.

I'm absolutely gobsmacked that nobody's mentioned Scott Joplin!
No competition, simply the best by a mile
For those that haven't heard of him, have a look on Youtube & prepared to get blown away!
